Because obviously Beasts of The Southern WIld is going to win Best Original Score. Wait, what? What do you mean “it’s not even nominated”!?!? This is a snub if I’ve ever heard of one. Well, I’m sure we all have had a time when we were absolutely convinced something or someone would win an award, only to be shocked to find that NOPE… they were snubbed!

Well, I still think Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin’s is deserving of at least a nomination. Not cool, people who choose the Oscar nominees. It’s alright though, I’ll still watch your misguided award show.

“’How does a film-maker make sure his music is heard? Let me give you an example. If someone has not been invited to a party, but wants to go, what does he do?’ [Ennio] Morricone acts out some noisy Italian bonhomie: ‘Hello everybody, hello.’

He pauses.

‘He doesn’t do this. He knocks at the door, asks for permission to come in, enters the house and then starts meeting people. The music in a film must enter politely, very slowly. The composer does not have to write music at the actual moment a character enters a room - it might be too much. So there is this slow, delicate entry, with a simple sound that allows the film-maker to lower the other, naturalistic sounds.

The human ear can distinguish no more than two sounds of different quality at the same time. Some very nice music doesn’t work because of that: if it is too strong, it can become an element that disturbs the film, rather than giving something to it. Yet in some cases the music must be very, very strong, when it is necessary to give a particular dynamic to the storytelling course of the film, rather than, say, a person’s feelings.”

Grouplove - Tongue Tied

I only recently learned about these guys so I’ve been listening to them a lot this past week. I’ll admit it: I’m not too sure what it is that I like about them. I just do. That can be reason enough, right?

Anyways, I picked Tongue Tied to share with you today because I feel like everyone needs a little bit of a pick-me-up in January. It begins with just some simple guitars but then it explodes into a plethora of instruments and vocals and it just takes off.

Grouplove formed in 2009 in LA and Tongue Tied comes from the album, Never Trust A Happy Song, released in 2011.
